Work Based Learning Office

This is a work-based learning experience that includes structured work experiences that are directly related to the student's educational program. The school and participating business organizations develop training and evaluation plans s the student's course of study and the means to measure his/her progress and success.

WBL (CTE) offers students an opportunity to extend the classroom into a workplace setting. These structured work experiences may be paid or unpaid and they carry 1.0 academic credit for students that are participating and successfully complete the program.

WBL (CTE) placements can be for a semester or over several semesters. This program requires a collaborative effort among the school, the employer, and the student. Therefore a training agreement is required and drawn up between the school and the worksite. A Student's learning plans are designed to correlate coursework with work-based learning. Student progress in this program is supervised and evaluated collaboratively by school and workplace personnel.

Characteristics of cooperative education include:

• Demonstrating relevant academic and technical skills
• Including an opportunity to achieve on-the-job knowledge and skills
• Provides students with on-the-job training by a competent employee
• Ensures students are participating in a related academic or technical course

WBL (CTE). - Students must complete an average of 10 hours per week on the job site. Students must also successfully complete the required related CTE course. Credit possible each semester = 1.0.

• Business WBL (CTE)
• Technical/Industrial WBL (CTE)
  • which includes placement in auto services, culinary arts, drafting, home building, machine tool technology, and graphic communications.

Work Based Learning (Non-CTE) is a structured work experience that takes place at the workplace and is not linked to any program of study, a particular class or career choice.

A written training agreement is drawn up between the school and the worksite. Student progress in these programs is supervised and evaluated collaboratively by school and workplace personnel.

These structured work experiences may be paid or unpaid and may take place in public, private or non-profit organizations.

Students are required to work an average of 10 hours per week and are not required to take a related course. Jobs vary and many students enter the program with their own job.

 Students receive 0.5 credit per semester for Work Based Learning (Non-CTE).

Internships are another good way of gaining career experience. Under an internship, the student applies academic and technical skills in a work or simulated work environment.

Like volunteers, most interns are not paid, but they also gain valuable job skills. Successful interns may be invited back summer after summer while they are in school and may ultimately be offered jobs.

Characteristics of this program include:

• Arranging for students to observe work and the workplace
• Developing needed work competencies
• Targeting experiences to student's chosen career fields
• Providing an opportunity for students to learn work terminology, climate, and protocol.

Students are required to work 5 hours per week. You need 90 hours or more to earn credit for the course.

Position must be unpaid and must be related to an academic course. 

Students receive 0.5 credit per semester for working.
