Mr. Newell joined Huron in 2014, bringing 19 years of classroom experience from both middle school and high school. Primarily teaching physics at the high school level, Mr. Newell has taught at both traditional schools and International Baccalaureate (IB) World Schools prior to teaching at Huron. Mr. Newell holds a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and a Master of Science degree in Physics Education, both from Eastern Michigan University.
Serving on the initial AAPS IB advisory committee, Mr. Newell helped design the model of IB in AAPS at Mitchell, Scarlett, and Huron. Mr. Newell then accepted the Middle Years Programme (MYP) coordinator role at Huron in 2015 where he helped the school through candidacy and the authorization to become an IB World School in 2017. Mr. Newell continued in the MYP coordinator role until 2025, when he accepted the Diploma Programme/Career-related Programme (DP/CP) coordinator role at Huron.
Mr. Newell is an active member of the International Baccalaureate Educator Network (IBEN) having been an DP physics examiner and site visitor/workshop leader. He currently holds the positions of MYP Program Leader and MYP Preliminary Review chair. Mr. Newell is also active in supporting IB schools in the state of Michigan, serving on the executive board of the IB Schools of Michigan (IBSOM).
